How to Maintain Your Immigration Status

当你在bet365中文学习的时候, always remember that maintaining 你的 immigration status is ultimately 你的 责任.

All students with a nonimmigrant visa should take 责任 for not letting their passport expire (apply for a new one 至少 six months 之前 the current one expires) 和 for monitoring immigration deadlines such as visa expiration dates 和 I-20 or DS-2019 program end dates. 它是 你的 责任 to take action if a deadline is approaching. 如果你的护照即将到期, contact 你的 local consulate or 大使馆 to find out how to renew it. If the program of study end date on 你的 I-20 or DS-2019 is soon approaching but you will not complete 你的 program by this date, contact a designated school official (DSO) in the Office of 国际学生服务 at iss@和rews.edu 至少 截止日期前30天.

如果你有F-1签证, make sure you keep all versions of the I-20 issued to you over the course of 你的 studies; if you have a J-1 visa, make sure you keep all versions of the DS-2019 issued to you over the course of 你的 specific exchange program.

最后, make sure you underst和 你的 responsibilities regarding key dates, full-course-of-study招生, 延长学习计划, 在适当的授权下工作, 在美国境外旅行.S., 和 taking breaks, all of which are outlined below (2-7).

If you are an bet365中文大学 student with an F-1 student visa 和 I-20, you should monitor certain key dates 和 take any required action:

  • 到达日期. Look at the program start date on 你的 I-20. You can enter the United States beginning 30 days 之前 this date (和 not any earlier).  You can enter the United States up to 30 days after this date, but you should have permission from 你的 academic advisor to arrive late or you will not be able to take classes. If you do not enter the United States within 30 days of the start date, 你的 I-20 will be auto-canceled by the Student 和 Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).

  • I-20项目结束日期. If the program end date on 你的 I-20 is approaching 和 you will not actually complete 你的 program by this date, 请填妥并提交 I-20延期表格 至少 30 days 之前 the program end date. If you wait until after this program end date to start the extension process, you will likely not have the extension option 和 will automatically enter the 60天宽限期 (see below).

  • CPT批准日期. You cannot begin off-campus employment through CPT until you have received authorization on 你的 I-20 with an official CPT start date from a designated school official (DSO) in the Office of 国际学生服务. If you begin working off campus 之前 this CPT approval 和 official start date, 你的 work will be considered unauthorized employment.

  • 选择申请时间. 你可以开始 选择 application process 和 submit the 选择 Status Form beginning 90 days 之前 the program end date listed on 你的 I-20. Make sure you will actually graduate at the time of this program end date 之前 you apply for 选择 because once you start the 选择 application process you cannot reverse it. You can also apply for 选择 up to 60 days after the program end date, but please underst和 that if you wait until 你的 program end date or after to apply for 选择, you will likely not be granted the full 12 months of 选择.

  • 选择开始日期. Once 选择 is approved by United States Citizenship 和 Immigration Services (USCIS), you will receive an Employee Authorization (EAD) card. You cannot begin working in 选择 until the start date listed on the EAD card.

  • 选择失业期. You do not need to have employment when 选择 is approved, but you do need to find employment (至少 30 hours/week) within the first 90 days after the start date listed on 你的 EAD card. If you do not register employment in 你的 SEVIS Portal account within these first 90 days, 你的 选择 status will automaticaly end.

  • 60天宽限期. Once 你的 program end date arrives 和 you have taken no previous action (such as extending 你的 I-20 or applying for 选择), you will automatically enter a 60天宽限期. 在此期间, 你可以申请选择, 申请另一个学习项目, 把你的I-20转到另一所学校, 或者什么都不做. If you do nothing, you will be required to depart the United States once the 60 days is up. NOTE: once you enter the 60天宽限期, you will not be able to extend the program end date on 你的 I-20. 最后,在完成选择 (i)后.e., the employment end date listed on 你的 EAD card), you will enter the 60天宽限期.

If you are in a visa status other than F-1, please contact the Office of 国际学生服务 to discuss which key dates apply to you.

如果你有F-1签证和I-20签证, you 必须 be registered for a "full course of study" each fall 和 spring semester to maintain 你的 immigration status.  If 你的 I-20 has a start date within any of the summer sessions (rather than at the start of fall or spring semesters), you 必须 be registered for a "full course of study" during that first summer you are on campus.

的“全部课程” 本科生 is defined as enrolling in 至少 12 credits per semester.

的“全部课程” 研究生 定义为:

  • Enrolling in 至少 8 credits (9 MDiv) per semester OR
  • Enrolling in a course or section categorized as having "full time status" in the current university bulletin

If you are in a visa status other than F-1, please check with a designated school official (DSO) about the number of credits you need to take each semester.

持有F-1签证和I-20签证的学生:

  • If you are not going to finish 你的 program of study by the end date listed on 你的 I-20, contact a designated school official (DSO) at iss@和rews.edu 至少 截止日期前30天. If you need to extend 你的 program of study end date, you can simply complete 和 submit the I-20延期表格.
  • If you let the program of study end date pass without completing or extending 你的 program of study, 你马上就会失去身份. 此时此刻, you will likely have to temporarily depart the United States, 再次支付SEVIS费用, 和 return to the United States with a new I-20 (和 possibly a new F-1 visa) 之前 you can enroll for more classes.

学生 with a J-1 visa 和 DS-2019:

  • Please contact a designated school official (DSO) at iss@和rews.edu 至少 30 days 之前 the program end date listed on 你的 DS-2019 if you intend to extend 你的 time as an exchange visitor.
  • 如果你错过了这个日子, you will likely need to pay a fee to have 你的 status reinstated, 在某些情况下, you may not be allowed to reintstate 你的 status.

If you are in a visa status other than F-1 or J-1, please contact the Office of 国际学生服务 to discuss if 和 how you can extend 你的 visa dates.

F-1校内就业:

  • 持有F-1签证的学生可以 在bet365中文工作 up to 20 hours per week while taking classes 和 more than 20 hours per week during school breaks.
  • If you are in 你的 first year of studies at Andrews, you can work up to 29 hours per week during school breaks when you are not taking classes; after 你的 first year of studies at Andrews, you can work up to 40 hours per week during school breaks when you are not taking classes.

F-1校外就业:

  • Working off campus requires authorization, most often through 课程实践训练(CPT) or 选择性实习训练(选择).
  • If you work off campus without authorization, the U.S. government (SEVIS) requires that a designated school official (DSO) in the Office of 国际学生服务 immediately cancel 你的 I-20. You will then be out of status 和 required to depart the United States immediately.

If you are in a visa status other than F-1,  you should visit the Office of 国际学生服务 to discuss 你的 employment options.

如果你有F-1签证 和 plan to travel internationally during 你的 program of study, visit a designated school official (DSO) in the Office of International Student services 之前 you leave the Andrews campus so that we can make sure you have everything you need to return.

Once you depart the United States, you will need, at the very minimum, the following to reenter:

  • 有效护照
  • Valid I-20 with active dates 和 current travel endorsement signed by a DSO
  • Valid unexpired F-1 visa (NOTE: citizens of Canada 和 Bermuda do not need the F-1 visa)

Depending on 你的 travel plans 和 the length of time you intend to be out of the country, 可能会有额外的要求. Always talk to a DSO 在你离开之前 so that you can anticipate 和 meet all requirements.

If you plan to be out of the United States for more than 5 months, 你的 I-20 will need to be cancelled 和 when you return to Andrews, you will be required to obtain a new I-20 之前 you can enter the United States.

If you plan to be out of the United States for an extended time but less than 5 months, it may be possible to temporarily deactivate 你的 I-20 和 reactivate it when you return, 但要让这成为可能, 你需要和DSO谈谈 这两个 在你离开之前 之前 the start of the semester that you will miss while you are out of the country.

If you are in a visa status other than F-1,  you should visit the Office of 国际学生服务 to discuss 你的 international travel options.

You can always take a break during official university holidays 和 vacation periods regardless of 你的 student visa status.

如果你有F-1签证, you are required to take a full load of classes (or be classified as a full-time graduate student) 每年秋季和春季学期, 和 you cannot take a break in either of these semesters.

F-1 students who take a full load of classes in spring semester 和 intend to take a full load of classes in the next fall semester can take a break from studies in the summer. F-1 students who are beginning their studies on campus in the summer (even if they have already started classes online in a previous semester) 必须 take a full load of classes (or be classified as a full-time graduate student) in that first summer.

If you are in a visa status other than F-1,  you should visit the Office of 国际学生服务 to discuss 你的 options for taking a break from studies.
